iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max - side by side

There are literally dozens of models of smartphones out there. Yet, just a few of them can be compared with the latest iPhones. Back in the days, there were just one or two new models of this popular phone. Today, Apple is introducing a few of them every year. iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max are good examples of the most powerful iPhones released in the last three years. The first one was introduced in 2019 while the second in 2018.

Today, people are excited to hear what they can expect from the newest iPhone, but the models we’ve mentioned are still quite powerful. These two phones have a lot of common, but they also have some unique characteristics. If you are wondering which one is better, you should check our in-depth comparison guide where you can read more about iPhone 11 Pro Max vs iPhone XS Max. There are a few things that we will analyze in this article and by reading more about these things, you can make a proper verdict.

Modern, big displays

The display is one of the first things that users are noticing in mobile devices. When it comes to iPhone 11 Pro Max, there is a Super Retina XDR OLED capacitive touchscreen where you can find up to 16 million colors. The size of the screen is quite big – 6.5 inches or 102.9 square centimeters. You can find the same screen size and type of display in the iPhone XS Max. What’s different is that the screen-to-body ratio in the latter is higher (84.4% vs 83.7%).

iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max have the same resolution, impressive 1242 x 2688 pixels with a 19.5:9 ratio that provides around 458 pixels per inch. These phones have a scratch-resistant glass with oleophobic coating. You can expect Dolby Vision support, HDR10, true-tone feature, 120 HZ touch-sensing, and wide color gamut in the two models. The only difference is that iPhone 11 Pro Max has slightly higher maximum brightness (800 nits vs 625 nits).

An elegant, classic Apple body

As for the dimensions of the body, iPhone 11 Pro Max has dimensions of 6.22 x 3.06 x 0.32 inches (158 x 77.8 x 8.1 millimeters). That’s a little bit more compared to iPhone XS Max – 6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 inches or 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 millimeters. This is the reason why the latter weighs 7.34 oz (208 grams) compared to 7.97 oz (226 grams). This is probably a difference that you won’t notice in your pocket or purse.

You can expect Gorilla Glass at the front side and back side as well as a stainless steel frame in these two phones. They support a single SIM or Dial SIM and meet IP68 dust and water resistance standards. You can use Apple Pay on both devices.

Modern cameras for taking high-quality videos and photos

iPhone 11 Pro Max has a main camera that comes with three modules – 12 MP wide module, 12 MP telephoto module, and 12 MP ultrawide module. What’s different in iPhone XS Max is that it has a main camera with two modules. Both of these modules are 12 MP modules – wide and telephoto. The good thing is that you will find HDR (for both panorama and regular photos) and quad-LED dual-tone flash in these two models. The options for taking videos are impressive and the same in both of them – 4K at 24, 30, and 60 frames per second as well as 1080p at 30, 60, 120, and 240 fps. Of course, there’s stereo sound and HDR support.

There is a significant difference in the selfie/front camera. Namely, iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 12 MP (wide) camera with SL 3D depth/biometrics sensor. iPhone XS Max comes equipped with a 7 MP (standard) camera with the same sensor. They both feature HDR. We should also point out that with iPhone 11 Pro Max, you will be able to take 4K videos at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second as well as 1080p (Full HD) videos at 30, 60 and 120 frames per second while iPhone XS Max offers just 1080p (full HD) videos at 30 and 60 frames per second.

Screen Repair Cost for iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11 Pro

Both devices are at the expensive end of the repairs price scale, both devices feature Samsung’s high-end OLED displays. The OLED screen in last years iPhone XS Max cost approximately $150 AUD to manufacture, this making it the most expensive part in an iPhone. What would be wonderful, if these prices flowed onto repair shops like Screen Fixed or even at Apple retail repair stores. This unfortunatley is not the case, you can expect to pay north of $450 to repair your iPhone XS Max at Apple or Screen Fixed. The iPhone 11 Pro Max Screen repair prices are the highest we have ever seen them in the third party repair industry here in Australia.

As the macro economic climate improves post the COVID-19 pandemic, repair shops and iPhone users alike can expect to see an increased supply in replacement iPhone screens which will lead to lower cost iPhone 11 Pro max screen repairs.

Hardware that contributes to the smooth performance but also to the price

Another difference between these two Apple phones is the operating system. iPhone XS Max comes with iOS 12 while iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with iOS 13. What’s great is that you can upgrade the OS in both of these devices (up to iOS 13.4).

Under the hood, you will find an Apple A12 Bionic with 7 nm in XS Max and the newer Apple A13 Bionic with 7 nm+ chipset in 11 Pro Max. The CPU is hexa-core in both cases, but the newer model has 2 x 2.65 GHz Lightning and 4 x 1.8 GHz Thunder while the older comes equipped with 2 x 2.5 GHz Vortex and 4 x 1.6 GHz Tempest chipset. It seems that there’s not much changed in the GPU compartment where the Apple GPU – four-core graphics – await users.

A powerful battery and fast charging for a smooth experience

Both the capacity of batteries and charging times are important for those who are planning on buying new smartphones. It seems that Apple has done a great job with its latest iPhones. The older, iPhone XS Max, model is equipped with a non-removable Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3174 mAh or 12.08 Wh. The newer model has a non-removable Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3969 mAh or 15.04 Wh. As a result of that, the talk time (multimedia use included) with iPhone 11 Pro Max lasts up to 20 hours compared to XS Max’s 16 hours. Music play in both phones is impressive – up to 80 hours vs up to 65 hours.

It’s worth mentioning that both devices come with a fast-charging feature. It’s a 15-Watt charging that ensures that half of the battery is full in less than half an hour. In addition to Qi wireless charging, you should expect to charge with USB power delivery 2.0 in both cases.

iPhone 11 Pro Max vs iPhone XS Max verdict

So, you are wondering which one is better? We can freely say that iPhone 11 Pro Max is the winner, but we should also highlight the fact that these phones are not drastically different. The Pro Max model is an upgraded version of XS Max. There are no revolutionary changes in the newer model. Also, there are not many new features present in this phone.

The only thing that you should think about before making a decision, in this case, is the price of the device. In Australia, the price difference between these two models is significant. The iPhone 11 Pro Max is around 20 to 30% more expensive than iPhone XS Max. In our opinion, this makes iPhone XS Max a better option at least when it comes to value. However, if you want a new device that will keep its value for a longer time, then you should consider purchasing the iPhone 11 Pro. All in all, they are both great devices that should serve an average user without any problems for a long period.
